The Pirates of Tokyo Bay are Tokyo's longest-running improv comedy group, performing English and Japanese improv live at What the Dickens! pub in Ebisu every month since 2010. We perform on the last Sunday of every month at What the Dickens! in Ebisu, a warm British pub just 3 minutes from Ebisu Station, 1 stop from Shibuya. The cast takes audience suggestions in English and Japanese and creates scenes, songs, and characters entirely on the spot. No two shows are ever the same.
You do not need to speak both languages. Physical comedy, pantomime, and gibberish make sure everyone in the room is laughing, regardless of what language they speak. Doors open at 7:00 PM, show starts at 7:30 PM. Your ticket includes your first drink free, and What the Dickens! serves a full British pub food menu before, during, and after the show.
毎月最終日曜日、恵比寿のブリティッシュパブ「What the Dickens!」で公演しています。恵比寿駅から徒歩3分、渋谷から1駅。キャストは観客から英語と日本語でお題をもらい、シーン、歌、キャラクターをすべてその場で作り上げます。台本なし、予測不能。同じショーは二度とありません。

What Is Improv Comedy? / 即興コメディ（インプロ）とは
Improv, short for “improvisational comedy”, is live, unscripted performance. There is no script, no rehearsal, and no plan. The performers create everything in real time based on suggestions from the audience. If you have seen the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, you have seen improv.
Improv is different from stand-up comedy. Stand-up is one person performing rehearsed material. Improv is an ensemble creating something new together, on the spot, every single time. It is more collaborative, more unpredictable, and the audience plays a bigger role, because their suggestions drive the entire show.
The Pirates of Tokyo Bay perform short-form improv, which means the show is made up of individual games and scenes rather than one long narrative. Each game has its own rules and format, and the audience provides the fuel. Some games are in English, some in Japanese, some use physical comedy that needs no language at all.
即興コメディ（インプロ）とは、台本のないライブパフォーマンスです。台本なし、リハーサルなし、打ち合わせなし。パフォーマーは観客のお題をもとに、すべてをその場で作り上げます。アメリカのテレビ番組「Whose Line Is It Anyway?」をご存じなら、それが即興コメディです。
スタンドアップコメディとの違いは、スタンドアップが一人の芸人が準備したネタを披露するのに対し、即興はチームでゼロから何かを作る点にあります。より予測不能で、観客の役割が大きい。なぜなら、ショー全体が観客のアイデアで動いているからです。
パイレーツ・オブ・東京湾が行うのは「ショートフォーム・インプロ」と呼ばれるスタイルで、1つの長い物語ではなく、個別のゲームやシーンで構成されています。各ゲームにはルールがあり、観客がお題を出します。英語のゲーム、日本語のゲーム、言語不要のフィジカルコメディゲームもあります。

Want to try improv yourself? Our classes take you from complete beginner to performing on stage in front of a live audience. No experience needed for Level 1.
Level 1: Fundamentals: Learn "Yes, And," scene-building basics, and trust exercises. 5 weeks, 2 hours per session. ¥25,000. Level 2: Scene Work: Pattern recognition, character motivation, heightening. 5 weeks. ¥25,000. Level 1 required.
Level 3: Advanced + Student Show: Deep character work, stagecraft, and a live graduation showcase. 5 weeks. ¥35,000. Level 2 required.
Classes are taught in English and Japanese, adapted to the group. Instructors include founder Mike Staffa and veteran cast members with 10+ years of performance experience.

Improv is not just entertainment. It is one of the most effective tools for building communication skills, psychological safety, and adaptability in teams. The Pirates deliver improv-based corporate workshops for organizations ranging from startups to multinationals.
Past clients include Google, the American Embassy, GLOBIS University, BizReach, Medtronic, and the Japan Foundation. Workshops are available in English, Japanese, or both, and can be customized from 30 minutes to a full day.

We hold open auditions once a year. No improv or acting experience is required. Many of our current cast members had never been on a stage before they auditioned. We are looking for people who can listen, react, commit to ideas, and show up on Sundays.
2026 auditions are on July 5th at Tokyo Comedy Bar in Shibuya. Free to attend.
