Pirates of Tokyo Bay is Tokyo's English and Japanese improv comedy group, performing live at What the Dickens! pub in Ebisu since 2010. On Sunday, September 20th, 2026, we are leaving our home stage for one night and heading to Shibuya to perform at the Tokyo International Comedy Festival, Japan's biggest English and Japanese comedy festival, hosted at Tokyo Comedy Bar. The festival runs from September 17th to 27th, 2026, with dozens of shows across the city. We're back at Tokyo's biggest comedy festival

For the third year running, the Pirates are part of the Tokyo International Comedy Festival, the 11-day celebration of comedy that takes over Shibuya and venues across the city every September. The festival pulls together local favorites and international touring comedians for stand-up, roast battles, live podcast recordings, and, in our corner of it, live improv.

Our show happens at Tokyo Comedy Bar, the city's dedicated stand-up venue and the festival's home base, about a minute's walk from Shibuya Station. It is a different room from our usual Ebisu pub, with a different energy: a packed comedy crowd, a proper stage, and the buzz of a festival in full swing.

Last year, we sold out

When we played the festival in 2025, our show sold out. The room was a mix of Tokyo locals, festival regulars, and travelers who had no idea what English and Japanese improv even was until the lights went down. By the end, everyone was in on it. We expect this one to fill up fast too, so if you want a seat, do not leave it until the week of the show.

What actually happens on stage

Here is the thing about our show: nothing is planned. A host asks the audience for a suggestion, a word, a place, a job, an emotion, and the cast builds an entire scene out of it on the spot. Some scenes are in English. Some are in Japanese. Some are in languages that do not technically exist.

You do not need to speak both languages to enjoy it. You do not need to speak either one, frankly. A lot of what we do is physical comedy, pantomime, and gibberish, the kind of comedy that lands no matter what language you think in. If you only speak English, you will laugh. If you only speak Japanese, you will laugh. That is the whole point.

さらに、ビジネス環境そのものが予測不能な時代です。計画通りに進まない状況で成果を出せるのは、正解を暗記したチームではなく、その場で聴き合い、アイデアを出し合い、軌道修正できるチームです。チームビルディング研修の目的は、まさにこの「変化に強いチームの土台」を作ることにあります。

研修の主な3タイプを比較

座学研修（講義・eラーニング型）。 コミュニケーション理論やフレームワークを知識としてインプットするには最も効率的です。一方で、参加者は受け身になりやすく、「良い話を聞いた」で終わって翌週には忘れられてしまうのが最大の弱点です。対人スキルは、知識だけでは行動に変わりません。

アクティビティ型（謎解き・スポーツ・BBQなど）。 盛り上がりは抜群で、懇親目的なら十分に機能します。ただし、楽しかった記憶と業務スキルが結びつきにくく、「イベントとしては最高だったが、月曜日のチームは何も変わらなかった」となりがちです。

体験型コミュニケーション研修（インプロ型）。 即興演劇（インプロ）などの手法を使い、身体を動かしながら傾聴力・発想力・心理的安全性を直接トレーニングする形式です。楽しさはアクティビティ型と同等以上でありながら、演習のひとつひとつが「聴く」「受け入れて広げる」「失敗を恐れず試す」という業務直結のスキル練習になっているのが特徴です。楽しさと行動変容を両立させたいチームには、この形式が最有力候補になります。

失敗しない選び方：5つのチェックポイント

1. 目的を明確にする。 「親睦を深めたい」のか「会議での発言や部署間連携を変えたい」のか。前者ならアクティビティ型でも十分ですが、後者ならスキル習得が設計に組み込まれた研修が必要です。

2. 参加人数と拘束時間に合っているか。 少人数の役員チームと100名の全社イベントでは、適切なプログラムがまったく異なります。半日で完結させたいのか、継続的に積み上げたいのかも最初に決めておきましょう。

3. 言語対応を確認する。 東京のチームは日本語と英語が混在することが珍しくありません。全員が同じ温度で参加できるかは研修の成否を左右します。例えばインプロ型の研修は身体を使った演習が中心のため、英語がわからなくても楽しめる設計が可能です。逆に日本語のみでの実施にも対応できるか、事前に確認しましょう。

4. 講師の実績を確認する。 どんな企業・組織に提供してきたか、講師自身がその手法の実践者かどうかは重要な判断材料です。研修テーマを「教えている」だけの講師と、日常的に「実践している」講師では、演習の説得力が違います。

5. 効果が定着する設計か。 単発のイベントで終わらせず、振り返り（ディブリーフィング）や職場での実践につなげる仕掛けがあるかを確認しましょう。行動変容を狙うなら、複数回のシリーズ型も選択肢に入ります。

インプロ（即興）研修とは？台本なしでチーム力を鍛える

インプロとは、台本なしでその場のアイデアからシーンを作り上げる即興演劇の手法です。台本なし、予測不能な状況の中で相手の話を聴き、アイデアを否定せずに受け入れて広げる「イエス・アンド（Yes, And）」の練習を繰り返すことで、心理的安全性・傾聴力・適応力が体験的に鍛えられます。Googleの研究でも、成果を出すチームの最大の共通点は心理的安全性だと報告されており、インプロはそれを座学ではなく身体で学べる数少ない手法のひとつです。（インプロそのものについて詳しくは、即興コメディとは？スタンドアップコメディとの違いをご覧ください。）

先日、2年ぶりとなる公開オーディションを渋谷のTokyo Comedy Barで開催したところ、なんと75名の応募が集まりました。1日がかりの選考でシーンワークやグループゲームに挑戦してもらい、最終的にクルー入りを勝ち取ったのは10名。7月のお笑いライブを皮切りに、この新しい顔ぶれが順次ステージに登場していきます。

A two-year gap between open calls meant the audition room was packed with performers who had been waiting for this exact door to open: actors, teachers, engineers, and stage veterans from across Tokyo's international community.
