Who is Ralph Reyes Del Rosario?
Ralph Reyes Del Rosario is a performer with Pirates of Tokyo Bay, Tokyo's English and Japanese improv comedy group, on stage at What the Dickens! in Ebisu since 2010. Originally from Chicago, Illinois and Atlanta, Georgia, Ralph joined the Pirates in 2026 through the group's open auditions. His comedy background is Atlanta improv: five years with K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid), the university improv team, coached along the way by mentors from Dad's Garage, one of the best-known improv theatres in the United States. In Tokyo he performs at our monthly show in Ebisu, where the ¥2,500 ticket includes your 1st drink free.
From pre-dentistry to "simple and stupid"
Ralph's origin story starts, in his words, the year the first iPhone came out. Everyone else was upgrading to a smartphone. Ralph switched his major from pre-dentistry to Theatre and Performance Studies and, as he puts it, "decided to be a dumb phone."
His family encouraged him. Then he saw the university improv team perform, and it "was like watching magic for the first time." You could tell the truth on stage, make your friends and family laugh, and be a complete fool, all at once. He had to join. He stayed five years, which he attributes less to devotion and more to not graduating on time.
Those five years included regular workshops with Dad's Garage, the Atlanta improv institution, and that is where the philosophy stuck: be simple, be honest, be a little dumb. "Isn't that life?" he asks. We are not qualified to answer.
What Ralph brings to the stage
Ask Ralph for his favorite improv game and you get a category rather than a title: the ones with a little heart and a little seriousness that also involve singing and rapping. Then he points out that this describes most of them. He is not wrong.
He has one Pirates show under his belt so far, and his highlight was the opener. Every show begins with the Shokai Song, a fully improvised sung introduction of the cast, and Ralph reports that he sang and danced through it with total commitment. The audience concurs.
The show is unscripted from the first note. Nobody, including Ralph, knows what the Shokai Song will be about until it starts.
